[The last morning of their six months, Hux comes to Jedao's door not only with his file, but with the contract he drew up. He's first to breath the silence]
It's six months to the day and our contract period is at an end.
He takes it and doesn't look yet, although he badly wants to.
"I don't think you've done nothing to help me," he says, and nothing in his tone betrays how difficult it is to admit. "But I do think you've done as much as you can."
Hux hands over his communicator, to which he's already keyed up the Admiral's request page;
To the Admiral;
It has been six months and I regret to inform you that I have failed in my responsibility to see Shuos Jedao graduated. I hope that you may find a more suitable warden that can help him in ways I cannot. Please unpair us.
Thank you, A. Hux
He glances up at that, exhaling a little.
"You don't think it would be overstepping my boundaries?"
He erases a lot of it, types rapidly, talking at the same time.
"There's no rule that we can't talk to each other. And I'm willing to talk to you, so that's not where the bounadary is. I'll tell you if you hit it."
He hands the communicator back.
To the Admiral;
It has been six months and I regret to inform you that Jedao Garach has not graduated. While I believe we have made some progress, I promised to step aside after six months elapsed, and I believe that the most important thing I can do for him now is to honor that promise. Please unpair us.
The answer comes a minute or so later. Hux takes out his dogtags, watching Jedao's signal fade.
"If there's one thing I've learned from this, I don't ever want to be enemies with you. And I'd like to keep speaking. You're odd, in a way I can't describe."
Jedao huffs something in the approximate clade of laughter.
"That's one word for it," he agrees, lips twitching at the corners. "I'm probably still going to be an asshole sometimes but you seem stubborn enough to deal with that."
backdated to end of December - sorry, meant to hit this sooner and then bought a house

I'm sorry I failed you.
I was overwhelmed too, no worries
Thank you for bringing the file. I meant to ask for that.

I attached some notes to it, but you're welcome to take or leave them.

“Hopefully I still have one more thing to teach.”
He crosses his arms, staring at the floor between them.
“I didn’t expect for this to be so hard.”

He hesitates, not wanting to end this, knowing he has to see it through for Jedao's sake.
"I've got a message lined up to the Admiral for the unpairing, if you want to review it. If not, I can send it now."

"I wouldn't...hate it, if you wanted to keep tabs."

"How's that?"

He asks honestly, reading over the communicator once it's handed back to him. Hux cracks a smile.
"It's good. Much better." He presses Send.

Hux knows too much about him; they've weathered too many upheavals together, no matter how gracelessly, in some cases.
"So we may as well. Although I suppose as the recent stabbing victim, I should really defer to you on the subject."

"I am going to miss you. Of course you won't be disappearing, but I'll miss this."
Whatever this is.
